Whether it's aliens, the apocalypse or a plague of immortal crickets, the only thing that's certain is that in a few short moments the world is going kaput.

That is... unless you sacrifice this person standing in front of you.

who:

Significant Other: The person standing before you is your boyfriend/girlfriend, fiance, spouse or something of that nature. On the bright side, you'll be upholding that "until death do us part" bit.
Family: A parent, a sibling, a distant cousin twice removed or maybe just your really favorite aunt/uncle. Either way, this person shares your blood and you're about to spill it. Bet that'll be awkward to talk about at the next family reunion.
Friend: Your best friend? Or just an acquaintance? Regardless, you're never gonna get those CDs back now...
Mentor/Mentored: This person taught you everything there is to know about the game of quarters. Or maybe this person was your protege wingman. All that matters is your bond as master and pupil goes deep.
Enemy: The person standing before you is a longtime rival or maybe your arch-nemesis! Lucky you, that should make this much easier! ... right?
Stranger: A complete and utter stranger. Who is this person? And can you really kill them with those puppy eyes?
Unrequited: The crush who refused your confession, the rival who never acknowledged you or the parent who refuted your existence. This is the person who refused to return your feelings, whatever they may have been.

why:

Holy McGuffin: Your sacrifice is the saintly reincarnation of some angel... god... thing... point is, their untimely demise will release their spirit so it can do... spirit-y things.
Blood Ritual: Turns out that crazy hobo witch doctor actually DOES know what he's talking about. Go figure. Too bad the process requires a lot of blood though. Of whatever specific bloodtype your sacrifice has... and whatever your sacrifice had for lunch in their system. I don't know, go ask the crazy man shaking a rubber chicken.
Evil McGuffin: Opposite of the Holy McGuffin. Your sacrifice is housing a serious anger management problem and it kiiiinda needs to go down. And if the sacrifice goes with it that's... well... we'll dedicate a holiday to you?
God Says So: Or some prophecy. Or that crazy lady with the shotgun sitting on her porch two doors down. Totally believable, right?
Betrayal: Giving them the remote control to the orbiting satellite above the planet seemed like a good idea in theory. It's not like you knew they were a two-faced liar the entire time. They just seemed so charming!
Master Plan: Someone's devious schemes have decided to end on the note of your death. Will it save the planet? Well the guy who's killing you has certainly been led to believe it will.
